Fabrizio De André's words, read aloud
January 1967: a month, and a grief that becomes poetry. Luigi Tenco, singer-songwriter and friend of Fabrizio De André, dies during the Sanremo Music Festival. At a time when the Catholic Church still denied religious funeral rites to those who had taken their own life, De André answered with an act of gentle rebellion: he wrote "Preghiera in Gennaio" ("A Prayer in January"), a song-prayer addressed directly to heaven, asking that his friend be welcomed "among the good" rather than judged by the rules of men.
Released as a single in 1967 and later included on his debut album "Volume I," the song also draws on "Prière pour aller au paradis avec les ânes" by the French poet Francis Jammes, from which De André borrows the idea of a wider, more merciful paradise — one that makes room for the fragile, the last, the ones dismissed by official judgment.
In this entry of the Creative section, I read the lyrics of this song aloud, setting the melody aside for a moment to give the words their full weight: one of the most intense and human pages in De André's entire body of work, still speaking today — nearly sixty years later — to anyone in need of a little mercy.
